Chapter Ten

His legs barely carried him across the passage to the inn and an ale. Silas stalked into the dining room and went straight to the bar. Flint was nowhere in sight so he slipped behind, grabbed a mug, and splashed cool amber liquid into it, uncaring if he slopped some onto the counter.

Without taking a seat, he gulped down the refreshing beverage. He plonked the mug on the counter and dragged a palm across his lips. Steadier, he turned to survey who else might be in the room. A few men in the back corner, a family by the fireplace, and his aunts in their accustomed seats close to the piano in the front corner. They seemed at ease. Did they know about Cassie’s attack? If not, they should. The looks on their faces and their emotional reaction to the news would be enlightening. He dragged in a fortifying breath as he hurried across the room toward them.

“Aunt Hope and Aunt Faith, I’m glad to find you here.” He hauled out a chair and sat down, afraid his legs would fail him. His reaction to his sister’s near miss proved far stronger than he would ever have expected. The brute tried to kill his gentle, loving sister. He swallowed the knot of fear gripping his throat. “Are you aware of what has just transpired in the parlor?”

Hope arched a haughty brow at him. “I’m sure you’re about to tell us since we have no idea.”

He reached out to them, sensed only their curiosity about the mystery he’d presented them. No glee or even concern. Faith tilted her head but kept her expression somber. They didn’t know. He relaxed, realizing he’d wrongly suspected their involvement with the killers. Which of course was patently ridiculous. He mentally shook himself. They were family, not killers. Took a calming breath and let it out slowly.

“Cassie was nearly killed.”

“Oh no!” Hope jumped to her feet, a hand at her throat. “Is she all right?”

Faith also gained her feet, bracing her fingertips on the table. “We should go to her.”

“Please, I didn’t mean to unduly alarm you. Just inform you. Giles is with her. She’s fine.” Silas was not. He stood but kept a fist on the table to steady himself. The trembling had lessened but it would be a few more minutes before the rush of fear on her behalf left his system. “While I have a minute of your time, please let me apologize for my abrupt question the other evening. I shouldn’t have raised such a sensitive topic without some little warning.”

Faith stiffened, her fingers tensing on the table. “Indeed. Your prying was inappropriate and gauche.”

“Now Faith, it’s fine. Silas was a boy and only saw things through his naïve eyes.” Hope lowered her hand to press her stomach. “He couldn’t know his father put the idea of deceiving the rest of the family into our sister’s head. Nor that she relished the deception.”

The aunts’ conviction as to his parents’ actions, however obscurely referred to, flowed into his core.
